Underwater Hockey at the University of Guelph

It is a game played by 2 teams of 6 swimmers wearing snorkelling gear and using a short stick to chase a brass puck along the bottom of a swimming pool.

Personal equipment: Snorkel, face mask with safety glass, fins, playing stick (25->34 cm), protective glove on the stick hand, and a head-cap with ear protectors.

General equipment: Either a plastic coated or brass puck is used and two goal troughs at opposite ends of the swimming pool.

Players: A team comprises 6 players in the water. In competition a team may also have 2 substitutes, and 2 spare players. Teams line up at opposite ends of the pool and the puck sits on the bottom in the middle.

  1. Underwater hockey is a non-contact sport.

    Three dimensional awareness is also improved. Unlike other sports, you have to be aware of the vertical as well as horiziontal position of players. You can swim over and under as well as around, and you learn to roll and tumble to change direction without losing orientation.
